10がつ14かのアクティビティ

This is today’s activity. If you cannot finish within class time, please finish at home.

1. In groups of 3-4 people, discuss the attributes of a good podcast. Also discuss categories that you feel are important in evaluating podcasts.(10 min.)

We will have not only teachers, but also your classmates and yourself evaluate the podcasts. Using the results of your discussions today as a basis, we will decide the criteria for evaluating the podcast project at the end of the semester.

  • In groups of 3-4 people, discuss the attributes of a good podcast. Also discuss the criteria that are important for evaluating podcasts project (i.e. both process and product).
  • Post the results of your discussion in the comment area of this blog. (To ensure that we know who posted, write your group member’s names. (initials are fine as well)

In 2-4 below, please write at least 1 sentence in Japanese.

2. Read the comments on your own blog. (10 minutes)
  • Read the comments of the people who commented on your blog. (If you already read them skip #2 and go to step 3 below.)
  • If you feel that it is necessary, respond back to the people who commented on your blog.

3. Confirm if comments you have made on others’ blogs have been responded to, or not. (10 minutes).
  • Check the status of comments you have left on others’ blogs. (If you have already done this, skip to step 4.)
  • If you think it is necessary, respond to any comments.
  • To ensure that you remember where you commented, please make sure to record on your comment sheet.

4. Comment on the blogs of students in other sections, and other universities (at least 5). (20 minutes)
  • To go to blogs in other sections, look at the link list on the right-hand side of the page.
  • To go to the blogs of students in other universities and countries, click on the link on the right-hand side of the page that says, "せかい(world)" under “ともだちをつくろう(Let's make friends.” At this site you will see にほんごいちねんせい as a link on the right, and underneath it there are various university’s names. If you click these links you will be brought to university homepages which have student blogs.
  • When you read the blogs and think you want to be friends, comment on their blogs. Try to keep the communication going with these students.
  • To ensure that you remember where you commented, please make sure to record on your comment sheet. Hand in your comment sheet at the end of class.
5. Write in your blog. (15 minutes)
  • Write in your blog in Japanese.
  • You can choose any topic. If you can’t think of any ideas you can write about what you will do on your day off for Election Day, or describe your favorite things/person using adjectives.

What is a good podcast?

First, a good podcast show their good knowledge, vocabulary and good grammar in Japanese.

Second, it should be entertaining, interesting and informative about life in Columbia and New York.

Should be:
Interesting
Shouldn’t be long, unless it’s REALLY interesting.
More quality than quantity
Properly paced; not too slow or too fast
Should be entertaining
Creative
Should have music (at least at beginning and end)
Good transitions
Should be accurate (or if not, a caricature)

A podcast is good when:
- it introduces an original and interesting idea.
- it comes with a well-made video to support this idea,
- it is original (or even funny) in its approach (song, short movie, etc)
- the audience learns from what is being discussed in the podcast (perhaps some information on japanese culture, or such)

A good podcast should be creative. It should present information in an interesting way, one that doesn't sound like you are simply reading information from a page. It should sound fluent and express a wide range of Japanese grammar and vocabulary from what we have learned so far. It should be long enough to get all the essential information across, but not so long as to bore the audience. It should be informative and fun to watch.

A good podcast should have a topic and focus on it throughout the entire presentation. It should be humorous and entertaining. It shouldn't be too short, and it should be a coherent presentation that introduces the topic and explains it efficiently and is packed with bad humor. Make sure your japanese is correct and pertains to what we have learned in class. Creativity is a bonus.

A good podcast should be relatively focused, with good clarity and pace of speech. The content should be interesting and relevant to the audience. Of course effective use of multimedia is important also.

A good podcast should have good music, graphics, a story to tell, with a good narrator who has clear enunciation. The length is important, but should not be more important than the delivery of the content. Most importantly, it should be interesting and entertaining in a way it can relate to the audience.

We think that a good podcast should include correct Japanese grammar. Moreover, it should be interesting and should have some sort of goal or purpose. Creativity is also important; music and proper editing should be valued. The podcast should also be a decent length and shouldn't move too slowly or too quickly.

A "good" podcast should not be boring. For example, when the actors/actresses speak in Japanese, they should not speak in a monotone tone of voice. They should use the proper pronunciations and inflections when speaking. It would also be nice if people weren't just standing around - they should have proper facial expressions, hand gestures, body posture, eye contact, etc. It would be nice to have some extra effects such as popular music and anime images (at least between scenes).

For content, a "good" podcast should include as many phrases as possible that the students have learned so far. It should also contain aspects of Japanese culture that cannot be conveyed through dialogue alone. The dialogue should also be accurate. Furthermore, the storyline should not consist of random moments bunched together; in other words, the story should flow easily from one moment to the next.
